I've just spoken with Joe Tuley and we've agreed that tomorrow's game should be CANCELLED as the pitch/ground is waterlogged and there is no prospect of it drying out to a fit state for pitch preparation, let alone play.

HELPERBY 3RDS
A couple of things to update you on:
(1) No match this weekend (23rd August). This is our "free" weekend.
(2) The postponed match against Ripley 3rds has been rearranged for Sunday 31st August.
This means that we will have two matches that weekend on Saturday (away against North Stainley) and Sunday (home, at Helperby, against Ripley).
This is our opportunity to get revenge on Ripley for when they beat us earlier in the season and for us to continue our excellent run of results.
It is important therefore that all 3rd team players let me know their availability for either day (preferably both!). I want to put out the strongest team possible both days which means we will need some people to play both Saturday and Sunday.
Can you let me know your availability via the blog, text (07899 960 858) or call (mobile or 01423 360 079).
Cheers
Rory

Directions to Thorp Perrow
These are from their groundsman so don't blame me if you get lost:
- Take A1 to Masham turn off
- At the Well/West Tanfield cross roads turn right
- Before you reach Thorp Perrow Arboretum you will reach Snape village - turn into the village and go through it
- At the edge of the village there will be some allotments on the right hand side and the road will bend round to the right
- There is a track off to the left (looks like a farm track) - head up there
- You will go through a couple of stone pillars and over a couple of cattle grids before you should reach the ground

The match will be played at THORP PERROW - yes I know none of you knows where it is. Its near the Arboretum - post code DL8 2PR (for the Arboretum)

Evening League Champions
Helperby CC have won Division 2 of the Pilmoor Evening League, after defeating Civil Service by 7 wickets.
The match went down to the last ball, with Helperby requiring 2 runs, chasing 134 for victory. Josh Brooksbank hit a cover drive which went to Deep Cover, and both him & Jo Corner scampered through for 2 to win the game.
After winning the toss, Civil Service decided to bat on a very sticky wicket. George Swiers bowled a great opening spell with only 12 runs coming from his 4 overs, and Matt Cavanagh had a superb 3/9 off 5, as Civil Service went on to make 133 off their 20 overs.
Matt Cav opened up with Ryan Achilles and they put on 40 off 9 overs, before Matt holed out to deep mid-off for 23. Pete Townsend was promoted to Number 3 and put on a quickfire 2nd wicket partnership before Ryan retired on 53. Pete was later dismissed for 28 and Cam Johnstone-Browne was dismissed early, leaving it to Josh Brooksbank and Jo Corner to make 24 off 18 balls. A couple dot balls passed, but a 6 from Josh relieved the tension as it came down to a run a ball in the last couple overs.
Requiring 6 off the last over, Helperby managed to wait until the last ball to clinch the game and the division!
Helperby and Crayke finished on the same amount of points for the year, but our average was slightly better (1.68 to 1.63!).
I would like to thank all of the drivers who have made an effort to transport the boys to and from away games. As most of the boys are under 18, it was really hard to get the boys to the ground and without these drivers, none of this could have happened. Thanks to Simon Joll, John Tuley, Simon Swiers, Mrs Clayton, and Mrs Townsend for offering to transport the boys during the year.
Also a big thank you to John Tuley for his help and support throughout the season.
A few Helperby boys will be playing at Thirsk on Wednesday 13th August in a presentation match, where we will receive our Champions Trophy. It would be good if everyone can make it to Thirsk so that Photos can be taken with the Trophy and Players. Presentations should commence about 8pm, right after the game.
Ive had a great time captaining the side and I am sure all the boys have had a great time!

Evening League Updates
With the season nearly over, Helperby has found itself equal first in the Pilmoor Evening League Div 2 table. The reamining games are against Sherrif Hutton and tied leaders Civil Service. There is a big chance that the team can win the Division and be promoted to Div 1.
I have found it really enjoyable being captain of the team, and despite fielding quite a young side, we have done extremely well against the opposition. I believe everyone's game has improved and I am hoping that the experiences these boys have playing on Wednesdays can help them develop into 1st team players in the near future.
Our bowling and fielding has improved dramatically since our first game against Raskelf. Everyone is more alert in the field and switched on, and the bowlers are bowling in the areas where batsmen struggle to put them away.
Here are some of the outstanding performances in the Evening League so far:

Hopefully we can win the next two games, and depending on the results of the other matches, we might finish on top! To keep track on the results, check our website (www.helperbycc.co.uk) under results and under the title PILMOOR EVENING LEAGUE.
John Tuley: 40*, 20*, 50 ret
Matt Cavanagh: 24*, 44*, 2/16, 4/16
Dan Marston: 26*, 2/15, 2/16, 2/11, 3/14
Joe Corner: 2/12, 2/16
Ollie Swiers: 3/7, 1/14
Cam Johnstone-Browne: 48, 21
George Swiers: 2/17
Dan Spink: 2/11, 1/13
Ryan Achilles: 52 ret, 50 ret, 49, 46*, 50 ret, 51 ret

Training
Attendance at training must improve significantly if we are to stay up in Division 1. Last week (although it did rain, training was still possible) there was only 3 1st Teamers, and 3 Juniors. It is hard to get something out of training if we keep consistantly getting these low numbers.
I understand that it is hard for people to make it down, but for those who have an opportunity to make training, please do, as it will not only benefit yourself individually, it will improve the quality of training others are getting.
It is also hard to conduct challengeing fielding drills with only 5 or so people, as this is the part of the game that needs to improve drastically if the 1XI is to stay up in Division 1.
It looks like we will be challenging Dacre Banks for the final relegation spot, so we must all make an effort to get a hit in during the week, or few overs in, to make sure that we are ready to take the field on the Saturday. I want us to stay in Division 1 and Im sure all of you want to as well, but we need to get back to basics and get a decent turn out at training (even making training for 20 mins is ok...as long as you turn up and get something out of it!) Games are won or lost in the field, and if we can improve our fielding (holding catches and stopping runs), we will win the close games that we have been involved with in the past.
Hopefully I will see alot more people on Thursday!!!
Cheers
Ryan

U9s vs Ouseburn, 14th July
The U9s completed their season on Monday with a home game against Ouseburn. With an outside chance of making the play-offs we knew that we had to play well against an Ouseburn that had been consistent all season.
Losing the toss, Ouseburn asked us to bat and on a slow wicket and outfield we struggled against an accurate bowling with only 4 wides bowled all innings. Ed (13) and Jack (9) were our best batsman, but our 234-6 never really like a winning total.
William with 2-8, Joe and Harry Tribe all took early wickets and at 191 Ouseburn looked like they might struggle to recover. However, our bowling attack was not as consistent and we bowled 17 wides, this being the main difference between the sides with Ouseburn posting a winning total of 258-4.
Two outstanding bits of fielding worth mentioning, a one handed “reflex” catch by wicket-keeper Herbie and a superb “diving forward” catch by Jack, similar to Jamie’s a few weeks ago…
So ends a really enjoyable season which has seen great improvement in the team.
It was a shame we didn’t make the play-offs, but that gives us something to aim for next season!
Thanks to all the players and parents for your support this year!

Helperby 3rds vs Ripley 3rds, Saturday 12 July
Unfortunately I have been unable to find another ground despite trying five alternatives. Ripley have confirmed that they CAN'T play on Sunday.
I have agreed with the League that we should try and play the match later in the season (ie play on both a Saturday and Sunday) if possible or arrange it as a shorter evening match.
Apologies but there will therefore be no 3rds match this weekend.

Helperby 3rds vs Ripley (Home) Saturday 12 July
Slight problem this week......
Should be playing at Cundall this week as a home game.....however now looks like they may be digging up their pitch from this weekend. I have sorted out alternative grounds for some of the later matches but not for this weekend yet. Therefore we may need to play on Sunday at Helperby.
This week I am therefore putting up a full squad (knowing that the 2nds will probably pinch several people). Can you please let me know via the blog, text, email or phone whether you are available for either Saturday or Sunday.
Thanks

Match reports: Knaresborough & Whixley U9s
Two match reports again. Firstly Knaresborough on the 23rd June. Knaresborough are probably the strongest team in the league, although I was hopeful that with a good performance we could push them close. Unfortunately this wasn’t our finest hour of the season and we came well second by 44 runs.
There were some real positives though, firstly probably the best catch I’ve seen at U9s level by Jamie Halsall. Diving forward to catch a fast travelling ball that would not have carried to him, he took the catch inches, sorry centimetres, above the ground. Super effort that …. Richie!
Secondly, Harvey’s bowling was excellent taking 2 wickets both bowled!
Moving on to Whixley on the 4th July, Whixley elected to bat scoring 233-5. All the bowling and fielding was truly excellent, but worthy of special mention are Harry Tribe with 2-10 and Jack Stabler-Langan with 2-1 including a wicket maiden!
The batting was back to a more positive approach and we ended up running out winners at 290-4, with excellent batting by George Fordy (16), Ed Challis (11), Herb (16) and Jack (10) securing victory.
Unfortunately our old friend the run out was back in play, these being two of our 4 dismissals, although the understanding of backing up as non-striker is definitely improving.
Let’s take this forward to our match against Cundall on Monday!

A great night was had by all who attended this well organised and fun evening.
Congratulations to Ryan for winning the Grand Auction at the end of the evening, and also to so many of our younger Club members who turned up and supported the evening.
It was a shame that so few senior members were there yet again!
Well done to David and Sandra Haddon for all their efforts and hard work on the night and to Simon and Annabel for running the bar.

Helperby 1st vs Dacre Banks
Following their poor batting the previous week (24 all out) Dacre decidied to bat first again, they obviously hadn't heard about our high class spin bowler (and others!). We again bowled tight and they never really got out of the blocks and in the end we had them 8 down for 143.
In reply we had a steady start, their left arm over opener had a very off putting but accurate action making it hard for matt and ryan to score quickly. Next up were there two spinners who we managed to stay on top of throughout their spells and even though steve lawrence picked up 3 wickets we were managing to score well off his loose deliveries. Matt, mark and pete orton all got starts but didn't transform them into 50's. We did reach their score with 2 overs left care of the "finishers" Nigel and Tom.
Another good team performance, and an enjoyable game to play in as the team spirit and confidence continues to build!!

9th June Helperby vs Studley Royal
Another brilliant team performance secured a comprehensive 66 run victory yesterday evening.
Studley won the toss and elected to field, William (12) and Harry Tribe (20) then put an excellent unbroken opening stand of 34.
Ed (6), Jamie (9), Herbie (16) and Jack (14) all contributed valuable runs to our 303 for 5 total.
Our fielding and bowling was too good for the Studley batters. A great improvement in the wide count and wickets for Harry Nuttal and Harvey, Jack, Harry T and Ed restricted Studley to 237 for 6.
Pick of the bowlers was Jamie though, who bowled 2 overs for 1 run and was very unlucky not to take a wicket.
One learning point for Friday, not getting run out backing up!
The team is really coming together, time we returned the compliment against Ouseburn!

Helperby 3rds vs North Stainley - Sunday 15 June
North Stainley have informed the league that they are unable to raise a team for Sunday 15th June and therefore Helperby will be awarded 6 points.
This may change if they do manage to get a team together SO WATCH THIS SPACE!!!
In any event it would be good to have a game on the Sunday so I am looking at organising a friendly in the event that North Stainley can't play - again WATCH THIS SPACE!!!

U9s vs Whixley (30th May) and Cundall Manor (2nd June)
These games were played in rapid succession last Friday and Monday respectively so I decided its buy one get one free time…..!
Against Whixley Jack won the toss and put Whixley into bat. Tight early bowling supported by excellent fielding restricted Whixley to 265-4. Herbie 2-4, Joe 1-13, Ed 1-10 and William 0-5 were the pick of the bowlers.
In reply we comfortably pushed past the required total (Ed 9) and with the game already won Herbie took the bowling apart, top scoring with 33! We finished up with 317-1 to build lots of confidence for our trip to Cundall.
On Monday we had the pleasure of facing up against Herbie, who in last minute shift was playing for Cundall against us. Jack again won the toss and he put Cundall in. Their innings started disastrously with Jack claiming 2 wickets in the first over which also included a run out. Cundall’s innings never fully recovered finishing on 251-9 (Ed 2-8 and Harvey 1-8). We also managed to claim 4 run outs including Herbie twice!!
The run chase stuttered a bit at times with run outs and wickets falling regularly, but I always thought it was going to be a close finish and so it proved. Ed was very unlucky to be caught and bowled, but he made amends by hitting his last two balls for four. This left the last pair (Jack and Harry Tribe) needing 23 to win. In a true partnership and with good running between the wickets ,Jack (15) and Harry (3) saw us home (252-9) with Jack blocking the last ball for victory.
Indeed Jack batted superbly throughout and showed great maturity in doing just enough to secure the victory!
Well done to everybody in both teams, now bring on Studley on Monday!

Helperby 1st vs Kirkby Malzeard
On a damp green track we were put in, and it was like batting at the start of the season again. Matt and ryan dug inn well and were beginning to get the upper hand when matt unluckily played on! Ryan was looking good for runs again until given out LBW. Shaun was unlucky when he played one on that didn't bounce true. The less said about the skippers dismissal the better! Ollie and Nigel consolidated until oli was given a very dubious LBW again! Kirkbys attack suited the wet track with lots of dibbly dobbly bowlers that were relatively easy to score off but easy to get out to as well! I don't think we had scored so freely all season but unfortunately kept losing wickets!
JT and Nigel batted well until they both hjoled out in quick succession bringing both Petes to the wicket. These two put on a very good partnership of 80 runs with some great striking by Pete senior!
Als strokelplay at the end was a display to savour and the 36 runs proved crucial!!
The awkward approach to the wicket from the pavillion end unsettled ryans early spell, but Matt and Al kept things together. Mark rediscovered his bowling arm and took his first genuine wicket of the season! It was a close finish but regular wickets inhibited their scoring rate and we ran out winners by 13 runs!
Another positive team display with everyone contributing and another step in the right direction! Bring on Dacre Banks!

Helperby 2nd XI versus Bolton Abbey match report
Scorecard
The seconds had a disappointing day at Bolton Abbey, losing for the second week in a row by 5 wickets.
Winning the toss and deciding to bat on what looked like a decent batting track, Helperby's plans immediately came unstuck as the ball bounced head high at one end and ankle height at the other. (OK - I'm exaggerating, but you get the picture).
The opening pair crawled along at just over a run an over for the first ten or fifteen overs, and batting continued to be difficult as Helperby reached 48 for 4 after 20 overs.
The middle order of Tom Jackson, Nick Buchanan and Tim Nash managed to get the batting back on track, scoring 102 runs between them as Helperby reached a total of 166 for 9 off the 45 overs, earning a valuable batting point.
Helperby's total looked competitive as Nick Buchanan opened the bowling with pace and accuracy, beating the opening batsman regularly outside the off stump; earning his just reward by clean bowling his "bunny" in the fifth over of the innings.
Unfortunately Nick was unable to bowl more than four overs because of a shoulder strain, and the momentum swung Bolton Abbey's way as Parkinson hit a rapid fire fifty; most of them scored in a very uncharacteristic 3 over spell from Gary Downey which cost 30 runs.
Bolton Abbey reached their target with five overs to spare and plenty of batting to come - Helperby were probably 40 runs short of a winning total.
While lack-lustre fielding didn't help the Helperby cause, the major cause for concern was just how far our heads dropped when under pressure. In a game where a match can turn on a single delivery, this was very disappointing and we need to be more positive when things don't go our way.
In the final analysis there were three key areas which contributed to the loss:
winning the toss and batting at Bolton Abbey was a BAD decision
the opening pair scored runs far too slowly, creating the 30 or 40 run shortfall in the team's total: whether this was down to demons in the pitch or lack of form is debatable
team spirit collapsed when Bolton Abbey were on top - we need to fight every inch of the way, especially in the phases of the game where the opposition is in the ascendancy
We move on to play South Kilvington, who are running away at the top of the Division.
Hopefully we can re-discover our competitiveness and confidence, and return to winning ways.

Helperby 1st vs Bolton Abbey
Mark again lost the toss and Bolton elected to bat on what looked a belter of a wicket (good work wrenny!)
Tight bowling from the opening pair kept their openers fairly well restricted, forcing them to play higher risk shots which were always going to give us a chance! Al seemed to be ball magnet and there was no doubts in anyones minds that al would snaffle the chance when it eventually came! Their other opener did reach 60 but was well "caught" by Pete Townsend, slightly premature celebration? Test match pace batting/ padding from their number 3 was never going to give them a daunting total, and they reached171 for 4 off their 45 overs. A good bowling and fielding performance by everyone!
In reply matt and ryan got us off to a good paced solid start, reaching 63 before matt was out having played some good strokes. Ryan continued to bat well whilst the middle order came in and played some good scoring shots but managed to all be out lbw! Tom batted through to the end with ryan scoring the winning runs with 4 overs left! this was an awesome knock by ryan and we hope this batting form continues now we have some good hard tracks to play on!
We can now mopve mon in a positive froma of mind having scored our first win into our next two crucial games!

Evening League vs Stillington
Pilmoor Evening League - Round 2
Helperby vs Stillington
After tactically losing the toss, we were asked to field first on a bright but chilly afternoon. Dan Marsden and Jo Corner opened the bowling and together bowled a tidy spell, with Dan taking 3 crucial wickets, thanks to a great catch taken by Tom Downing. George and Olli Swiers bowled well with multiple dot balls in the final overs, as George took 1 wicket, then Matt Cav and Ryan Achilles bowled at the end to restrict the opposition to a modest 118 from their 20 overs.
Ryan opened up with Alex Clayton and the two had a reasonable opening partnership, before Alex was bowled by a decent outswinger from the young opposition bowler. This brought veteran John Tuley to the crease, and instantly took control of the situation with Ryan, as they hit boundaries and ran quick singles. Unfortunately John was dismissed by a slower ball (even after being warned by Ryan that the bowler has a good slower ball!!!), This brought Jolly out to the middle, and did a fine job at working the ball around and keeping the scoreboard ticking.
After hitting the first change bowler for 23 off his first over, Ryan had to retire on 51. First gamer Dan Spink knocked the ball around, but Jolly was dismissed followed by Dan, but Matt Cav and Jo Corner steered the team to victory with about 2 overs to spare.
Next game is on a Tuesday due to the Champions League match being held on Wednesday.

Match Report Helperby 1st X1 vs Alne.
On what looked a good track we were put into bat by Alne. Due to work committments Mark had to go, so we were effectively reduced to 10 men batting line up. Sean and Pete Orton scored 36 and 35 respectively, as we ended on 162 for 8, geeting a batting point. On an Alne wicket where 200 is about par we knew we would have to bowl well, and we did just that having them 39 for 6 at one point. Unfortunately their 3rd bat played himself in and carried his bat, with them hitting the winning runs in the final over.
We were all gutted having been so close to beating one of the stronger sides in the league, just to be pipped at the post! We must however take heart from our vastly improved bowling and fielding performance and go into the next 3 massive games with spirits up so that we give ourselves the best chance we can of picking up points!!

HELPERBY 3RD XI VS STUDLEY ROYAL 4TH XI
Scorecard
Saturday saw a successful nail biting finish for the 3rds thanks to a well paced innings from Cupes who crafted an excellent 71 not out.
Wining the toss we put Studley in on a very green looking wicket. A quick and accurate opening spell from Stuart Cross (6ov, 1m, 11r, 1w), supported by George Swiers (4,0,17,0) and Chris Fryer (10,2,30,2) kept the Studley batsmen pinned back. The Studley juniors batted well and several times threatened to put together big partnerships only for Helperby to achieve breakthroughs at key stages through tight bowling and good work in the field (catches by Tom Jackson, George Swiers, Chris Fryer and Peter Mitchell).
Stuart Cross returned for another tight spell (6,2,9,1) supported by the skipper (10,2,33,2), Rob Challis (4,1,15,0) and John Wilson (4,1,19,2). However we were unable to take the last two wickets to gain the bowling point with Studley finishing on 145 for 8 off 45 overs.
In reply Helperby lost the early wicket of Peter Mitchell although runs continued to come from Alex Clayton who had at least three lives as he kept managing to find the one Studley fielder who couldn’t catch.
Cupes held up one end after Alex departed for 26 and Tom Jackson for 1. With the arrival of Rob Challis the pace began to pick up although at this point Cupes had scored around 17 runs from 20+ overs and was doing one of his better Chris Tavare impressions. However experienced showed in the way he paced his innings as runs began to flow after the departure of Rob for 13 and George Swiers for 0 with a flurry of boundaries, quick singles and even some twos and threes!
The match entered its final 8 overs with Helperby needing 40 runs. Cupes was supported by Stuart Cross (8) and Chris Fryer (7) and brought the requirement down to 11 runs from 2 overs. At this point the skipper gave another cameo performance with a waft across the line and was bowled first ball. Luckily for him Dan Spink showed more sense and ran a number of quick singles with Cupes.
Entering the final over Helperby needed 6 runs. Two singles off the first three balls left Dan on strike with three balls to go and four needed to win. Studley brought the field in to cut out the single and could only look on as Dan pulled the next ball for a fantastic four.
A good all round performance by Helperby in the field had restricted Studley to a gettable score and thanks to Cupes' excellent 71 not out (and support from the junior batsmen) we managed to get there. Just.

Helperby 2nd XI versus Goldsborough 2nd XI match report
Scorecard
Helperby's great start to the season came to an end with a 5-wicket defeat at the hands of Goldsborough.
Electing to bat on a good looking track, Helperby scored what looked like a match-winning score of 233 for 5.
John Tuley again contributed the bulk of the runs, scoring 104 in a terrific attacking innings before losing his wicket in the penultimate over.
Joe Corner scored his second fifty in three games, finishing the innings on 59 not out and Helperby went into tea confident of victory.
Unfortunately, wickets proved extremely hard to come by, and the Goldsborough opening pair put on 120 for the first wicket, using the pace of the ball and the benign track to good effect.
Introduction of the leg spin of Joe Kinsella finally broke the opening partnership, but the damage had largely been done by then.
A couple of wickets each from Gary Downey and Joe Corner were the only reward for a long afternoon in the field, and Goldsborough hit the winning runs with a couple of overs to spare.
Although the defeat was disappointing, we still head the table alongside Masham and Newton-le-Willows and the team is getting stronger each week - it was great to see Nick Buchanan back in Helperby "colours" this week.
We head to Bolton Abbey this coming weekend, and need to get back on the winning trail.

19th May vs Knaresborough
Great game with a close, exciting finish.
Herb lost the toss and they put us in, although we would have batted anyway as it looked like rain!
A great start by James (8) and George (6) was ably supported by William (5) with some really nice off-drives.
Jack (18) hit the only two 4s of our innings and he took the bowling apart at the end with support from Herbie (9).
We posted 270 which the coach thought would be enough and our early fielding and bowling certainly backed this up with a run out and a great catch by Ed Challis pegging Knaresborough's reply back. The last pair needed an unlikely 28 off the last 4 overs to win, but some big hitting by James (17) and support by Willem got them home with 2 balls to spare.
A great team effort lads, particularly with the batting. There was only 1 run out this week and the calling/judgement of a run was definitely improved.
We bowled 8 more wides than they did (=16 runs!).
Bowling practice Friday then... !

Helperby 2nd XI versus Newton-le-Willows match report
Scorecard
The seconds continued their strong start to the season by winning a close game against Newton-le-Willows by a margin of ten runs.
Andy Barlow - starting as captain for the first time this season - carried on where Joff left off, lost the toss and was put into bat by the opposition captain.
The first over was hit for twelve runs as John Tuley treated the opening bowler with total disdain, hammering a four and a six off the third and fifth ball of the over.
Then it all went horribly wrong - from 17 without loss, Helperby collapsed to 27 for 4, with Jolly, Charlie, Joe and Joff contributing a grand total six runs between them.
Fortunately, John was in the mood for runs.
Ably supported by Euan Shepherd on debut (18 runs before John had a brainstorm and decided to run him out) and Dan Marston who finished on 13 not out, John remained at the crease for the full 45 overs, hitting 84 not out and taking Helperby's total to a competitive 146.
Newton-le-Willows began their reply with gusto, with all their top order batsmen giving the impression that they wanted it over quickly, smacking most of their runs in boundaries.
Our Junior bowlers kept their heads whilst the batsmen appeared to lose theirs, and wickets came steadily as the batsmen continued to play their shots.
Newton-le-Willows stumbled to 100 for 7 at 20 overs and the game looked to be in the bag for Helperby, but S Coombs held on stubbornly and was supported in a rear guard action by J. Abbotson.
Newton-le-Willows were only 25 runs adrift when Helperby - who didn't look like getting either batsman out - had a stroke of luck when J Abbotson bizarrely opted to trash his own wickets with a full-blooded sweep shot.
The Newton-le-Willows tail wagged briefly but their efforts to win the game ended ten runs short as Gary Downey and Joe Corner polished off the innings.
All-in-all, not one of Helperby's finer performances but if we can win games like this when we're below par, then I think we have a great chance of promotion this season.

Helperby U9s vs Ouseburn 12th May
Another close game for the U9s, this time at Ouseburn.
Skipper Harvey won the toss (that's a 100% record so far!) and elected to field.
Good all round bowling was shown with 6 of our bowlers each taking a wicket.
Ouseburn ended up on 297-7, which was proabably a few runs too many, although the boundary on one side was very short. That's a lot of wickets to take and if the coach could set a field we could probably have knocked at least 10 runs off that!
In reply George and William opened and ran some really good quick singles, although their understanding was not always perfect and this did lead to a couple of run outs!
Although the batting in the middle overs was a bit slow Ed Challis, with a quickfire 10 runs including a lovely 6 over long on got us close with 31 runs needed by the final pair.
Herb (19) and Jack (4) tried their hardest and we finished 8 runs short (289-3) with some decent Ouseburn bowling and fielding seeing them home.
The encoraging thing is we are not losing many wickets and I'm sure that if we can tighten up on a few aspects like our ground fielding and running between the wickets, more wins will follow.
Another good team effort lads and I'm sure we'll repay the compliment in the return match .

Helperby 3rds vs Sessay 3rds
Saturday saw an encouraging performance against the Division leaders with some strong performances by junior members of the team (and some of the older ones).
Winning the first toss of the season Sessay were put into bat. Stuart Cross and George Swiers both bowled an impressive opening spell each picking up one wicket and restricting Sessay to around 3 runs per over.
Runs continued to be tight with the change of bowlers as Chris Fryer picked up a wicket in his first over, although thereafter the Sessay number 4 and 5 batsmen had more than their share of luck with catches just falling short and inside edges narrowly missing the stumps.
After 33 overs Sessay were still in the nineties. However the batsmen began to pick up the pace and despite Stuart Cross picking up 2 more wickets in his second spell Sessay closed on 172 for 5, some 40-50 runs more than they looked like getting not long before.
The Helperby fielding was good throughout the 45 overs and the bowling generally tight.
In reply Helperby got off to the best start of the season reaching 47 without loss with both Peter Mitchell and Alex Clayton looking confident, running well and keeping the run rate ticking over. George Swiers continued his good batting form after Alex Clayton was caught on the boundary for 18. Two wickets fell in quick succession as Peter Mitchell was run out by a throw from the boundary and Dave Haddon, suffering with a calf injury was caught on the boundary.
George Swiers kept his head down and consolidated well with Rob Challis and the pair put on 34 runs in good time before Rob was also caught on the boundary. At 90-4 with 25 overs still to go a win was well within our grasp. However a rapid clatter of wickets saw the last 6 wickets fall for 10 runs which meant we ended up 100 all out.
In the field we had been competitive until perhaps the last 8-10 overs and whilst batting we had been ahead of the game for the first 20 overs. Unfortunately we were not able to keep up the necessary level throughout either innings although there were encouraging signs for the rest of the season.

Helperby 1st X1 vs Goldsborough
On a hot humid afternnon we opted to have a bat first with the track looking as though it had dried considerably! Unfortunately the wicket proved to be lower and slower than expected, making life as a batsmen not particularly easy. We managed to accelerate the scoring towards the end of our innings, with a good contribution by Pete Townsend, who scored 32 on his 1st X1 debut. Matt Cav again batted very solidly making 46. We managed 164 from our 45 overs gaining a batting point once again!
In reply Goldsborough were quiet early doors with a good opening spell by Ryan, and a sharp piece of fielding by Pete leading to the runout of their opening bat. Unfortunately their number 3 managed to use a few lives up and made 74 not out to take them to our total for the loss of two wickets. In general our fielding was better, but we must still put the effort in to practice more! 164 was not quite a par score but we do need to defend our totals better by bowling tighter in the middle overs!
Next week is the local derby against Alne so we need a massive performance from everyone in that game!!

Helperby U9s vs Studley Royal
Last Monday the U9s season got off to an excellent start with a close win against Studley.
Winning the toss, Ed Challis elected to field and some excellent bowling and fielding restricted Studley to 262. Harry Nuttal took an excellent catch in his first game for Helperby and Harry Tribe got a run out on the last ball of the Studley innings.
In reply a slow, steady start got us close and left Herb and Freddie Turner to get us over the line with some emphatic hitting lifting Helperby to 279 and 2 points in the bag.
Crucially, we conceded far fewer wides than Studley, so we need to keep bowling straight and at the wickets and I'm sure more wins will come; keep practicing the bowling...
Overall it was a great team effort, well done lads on a great start!
Also, well done to Jack Stabler-Langan who, absent due to chess comittments, has won through to a chess "Gigafinal" in Manchester! Good luck with that Jack!

Helperby 2nd XI vs Pannal 3rd XI 3 May - Match Report
Scorecard
On a lovely, warm, Saturday afternoon, we entertained Pannal 3rd’s at home. They arrived with only nine men, hoping the other two would arrive before too long!
On winning the toss, Pannal bravely elected to bowl.
Jolly got the innings off to a good start, scoring 37 runs. Unfortunately, he didn’t get the support we would have hoped, from the other senior players.
Joe Corner had a match winning performance of 81 runs, backed up by Tim Nash and Pete Townsend on 28 runs. Gary Downey and Dan Marsden batting out for the point.
After tea, all the Helperby bowlers bowled with exceptional economy – Dan Marsden, 6 overs, 6 runs for 2 wickets; Joe Kinsela, 4 overs for 4 runs; Gary Downey, 5 overs for 14 runs; John Tuley, 6 overs, 13 runs for 1 wicket.
A deserving man of the match was Joe Corner, with figures of 8.3 overs, 15 runs for 5 wickets – an excellent performance!
Finally, thanks to Tom Downey who, at the last minute, was available to play and was a good asset to the team.
After two good wins, I am now pleased to hand the captaincy back to Charlie – here’s to a successful season!

Helperby 3rd XI vs Burton Leonard 3rd XI 4 May - Match Report
On a filthy wet day at Burton Leonard the Helperby 3rd XI managed to grind out a draw and secure a point thanks to some limpet like lower order batting from the junior members of the team.
Burton Leonard won the toss and chose to bat on what looked a good track. After a delayed start for rain Helperby were in a good position with the score at 38 for 1 after 13 overs thanks to some tight bowling from Andrew Harrison (5ov, 1m, 11r, 0w) and George Swiers (6,1,15,1) and a good catch at slip by Peter Mitchell, before the rain started to come down again.
After an extended rain stoppage and early tea the match was reduced to 31 overs per side. We were confident at this point of keeping Burton Leonard to a chaseable score through some tight bowling.
Unfortunately the skipper decided to bring himself on at this stage and despite some excellent bowling from Chris Fryer (9,1,23,6) which included a hat-trick (and nearly a second), the runs began to flow as the Burton Leonard players swung the bat finishing on 100 for 9.
Sadly we were unable to gain the bowling point due to the skipper’s inability to land the ball anywhere near the stumps. On the whole our fielding was tight with Stuart Cross fielding particularly well, showing fantastic commitment in chasing down every ball.
Throughout most of the second half of Burton Leonard’s innings the rain had continued to fall and by the time we came out to bat the wicket had deteriorated considerably. Again the skipper let the side down being out first ball and thereafter wickets fell at regular intervals leaving Helperby at 45 for 7 with around 15 overs to go.
At this point the junior players really stepped up to the mark with some excellent rearguard batting – not only occupying the crease for crucial overs but also scoring valuable runs to secure the point. Andrew Harrison and Joe Jordan formed an invaluable partnership of 23 runs and were ably supported by Dan Spink and Ollie Swiers, all of whom showed a rock solid defensive technique. Helperby finished on 86 for 9.

Helperby 1st Xl vs Masham 1st Xl Sat 26th April
Scorecard
The Helperby skipper lost the toss again and we were duly put into bat on a fairly green and damp track. The Masham opening bowlers bowled with a great deal of accuracy, along with pace and a bit of movement, which made life for our openers particularly hard! After a difficult start the middle order managed to score a few with Mark, Ryan and Joss scoring 30's. Finishing on 129 for 6 we had gained a batting point and thought with some tight bowling and fielding we had a chance.
Unfortunately the Masham opening pair, even with a lot of shots going into the air, managed to avoid our fielders and scored at a reasonable rate on a pitch that was drying out all the time. They reached our total with 10 overs to spare.
Ryan showed what he is going to be capable of with the bat, especially as conditions get more favourable, and bowled well again also. His partnership with Joss was the one that enabled us to get to the total we did in difficult conditions.
If we can apply more pressure to the opposition batsmen with more aggressive fielding and really tight bowling we will soon I'm sure see some victories in the coming games.

Helperby 2nd XI versus Masham 2nd XI: Saturday 26 April match report
Scorecard
After losing the toss, Helperby were put into bat on a slow, wet track.
Runs were hard to come by and after 20 overs we only had 31 runs on the board for the loss of 2 wickets.
A solid performance by Olly Turner, 69 not out, who batted all 45 overs with the support of Joff Sowray, 37 not out provided Helperby with a reasonable looking score of 135 for 4 wickets.
After a delicious tea, Masham found runs equally hard to come by on an improving wicket. Our young bowlers, were on good form - Dan Marsden 1 for 29 off 12 and Joe Corner 1 for 18 off 8, supported by the ever youthful Gary Downey (4 for 24 ). David Sowray and Olly Turner chipping in with figures of 2 for 36 2 and 2 for 12 respectively.
Good fielding all round and catches held, led to Masham being bowled out for 123.
A good, tight game ending in the right result; and a great start to our season

Helperby 3rd XI vs Ripley 3rd XI - Match Report
SATURDAY 26TH APRIL 2008
Scorecard
After the high of last week’s inaugural win for the 3rd XI reality bit back this week with a comprehensive defeat to Ripley 3rd XI by 106 runs.
With a number of last week’s team playing for the 2nd XI or absent we fielded a significantly changed line up with a total of 7 junior players and after losing the toss Ripley chose to bat first on a surprisingly good track with a fast outfield and short boundaries square of the wicket.
Given the quality of the wicket anything short or wide was always going to be put away and Ripley’s opening pair capitalised on the relative inexperience of the Helperby attack and got off to a good start. The introduction of Stuart Cross into the attack in the 12 over brought the first breakthrough with the score on 67. However Ripley’s opening batsman who spent most of last season playing 1st or 2nd team cricket continued to capitalise on the regular loose balls and scored at a steady rate.
Wickets were hard to come by with the second falling at 131 although there were a couple of dropped catches and a number of shots falling short of fielders. Towards the end of the innings we picked up three quick wickets as Ripley pushed for runs.
John Wilson and George Swiers combined for a run out, Alex Clayton took a good catch off the bowling of George and Dan Spink caught the opening batsman off the bowling of Stuart Cross. Ripley finished at 226 for 5 with their opening bat making 112, the next highest score being Extras with 33.
The Helperby bowlers stuck at it well throughout the 45 overs as did the fielders. With the exception of the opening batsman no other player got away on what was a good batting wicket. Unfortunately there were just too many short or wide balls.
In response Helperby got off to a quick start keeping up with the scoring rate but also lost early wickets with the loss of Alex Clayton (for 12) and Peter Mitchell. George Swiers and Dave Haddon combined in a partnership of 53 before Dave was caught for 41.
George Swiers continued to hold the innings together as wickets fell around him before being out for 22. Robert Usher and Dan Spink held out well at the end but were left with too many overs to see out. The Helperby innings closed at 120 all out.
Whilst this was a come down after last week, the difference between the two teams came down to Ripley’s opening bat and his twin brother (also a 2nd team regular) who took 5 wickets. Therefore the team shouldn’t be disheartened and the return match should be much closer.

Helperby 1st X1 vs Ouseburn
Scorecard
On a very soft slow wicket Helperby lost the toss and batted first. After a solid steady start by Chav and Sean ,unfortunately, it proved difficult to score highly on a difficult track. We reached a total of 108 off 45 overs.
We took 3 early wickets but were unable to dismiss their number 3 who went on to get 50 and won them the game.
Ryans performance with the ball, along with cav will enable us to bowl teams out, and as long as the tracks firm up i'm sure ryan will be able to prove himself as a batsman as well!

CORRECTION TO 3RD XI MATCH REPORT
Obviously I knew that the 3rds were actually playing Kirkby Malzeard 2nds (not Killinghall 2nds) - just wanted to see if anyone was paying attention.
MATCH REPORT - HELPERBY 3rd XI VS KILLINGHAL 2ND XI, 20TH APRIL 2008
Scorecard
Sunday 20th April saw the first game in the Nidderdale League for Helperby’s 3rd XI. The aim of the team is to extend opportunities for 45-over cricket to both the ever growing list of senior players at the Club as well as junior players in the U15 and over age groups. To this end the team for Sunday’s game against Killinghall 2nds comprised 5 senior and 6 junior players.
Losing the toss Helperby were put into bat in cold, damp and overcast conditions. Peter Mitchell and Joe Corner opened the batting and got off to a steady if slow start against some tight bowling. Whilst the pitch is vastly improved over last season runs are always going to be hard to come by at this time of year.
After the loss of Peter Mitchell for 8 Lawrence Mannion came in with great expectations resting on him to take apart the Killinghall attack. Unfortunately a rush of blood against Killinghall’s young leg spinner who was getting some good turn led to an early departure for 7.
After 17 overs Helperby were 20 for 2 and looking at defending a score of around 100. At this point Peter Townsend gave an excellent demonstration of aggressive batting scoring a quick fire 40. At the same time Joe Corner stepped up his scoring rate and the scoreboard started ticking over.
On Peter Townsend’s departure George Swiers (21 not out) and Joe Corner kept the score going at a healthy rate ably assisted by Chris Fryer (14), after Joe’s departure for a well crafted 51, with Helperby ending up at an excellent 168 for 6 after 45 overs.
In their reply Killinghall got off to an equally slow start against some excellent tight bowling from Joe Corner (6 overs for 7 runs) and Andrew Harrison (5 overs for 1 run). A change of bowling quickly paid off with George Swiers (6 overs, 3 wickets for 15 runs) Joe Jordan (5 overs, 2 wickets for 18 runs) and Oliver Swiers (5 overs, 1 wicket for 14 runs) scything through Killinghall’s top order.
The oldies (John Wilson, Chris Fryer and Rory Wade) stepped in with a few overs towards the end to finish off the tail although by that time the match had already been well and truly decided.
The bowlers were well supported by their fielders with good catches from Peter Mitchell, Peter Townsend, Andrew Harrison and Chris Fryer, smart work from Joe Jordan and Peter Townsend for a run out and again from Peter Townsend on a stumping to close the innings.
This was an excellent start to the season for the 3rds with the junior players contributing the majority of the runs (112 out of 149 off the bat), bowling the majority of the overs (27 out of 35) and taking most of the wickets (7 out of 10). Congratulations once again to Joe Corner on scoring his maiden half century.
Special mention should go to Jennie Wade and Debbie Mitchell for laying on a fantastic tea of hot soup and bacon roles to warm us all up enough to face the second half of a freezing cold match.
